Classroom Procedures
- Students will walk into the classroom, check in for lunch, put away assignments, and get materials before transition music stops playing.
- Roll is taken from the check-in chart at the front of the classroom. The teacher records the attendance and lunch count.
- The transition music will end, signaling students class is beginning.
- The teacher will determine seating.
Planners
- Students are expected to record their assignments each day at school. Your child will be given a planner at the beginning of the school year. They will write down the assignments from each subject throughout the school day. Parents are required to sign the planner each day to ensure your child is being responsible and is sharing what they have done at school. Please feel free to use the planner as a communication tool with the teacher. We will check for parent signatures and/or notes each morning.
Classroom Management
- Students are allowed to leave their seats with teacher permission.
- There are scheduled restroom breaks throughout the school day. Students who have “an emergency” are allowed to use the restroom and are escorted with a classmate to ensure safety. The student must sign in and out on the log.
- Anytime students need to leave the classroom to go to the nurse, counselor, office, library, etc., they must have teacher permission and sign the log.
- We have a 5th grade website for communication with families. We will use Curriculum Night, daily planners, email, phone calls, and conferences to contact families for celebrations and concerns.
- Students should raise their hand for permission to speak during whole group instruction.
- The teacher will dismiss the students at 3:35 to get their backpacks and coats. They will also collect their planners and homework. Students will walk out together with the teacher.
- Music will be used for transition times. Students must put away materials and get ready for next activity.
- Students are given a line order throughout the year. They are expected to “Walk the walk, and stop the talk.”
- All students will be expected to follow the three Riley rules at all times during the day. These rules are: be safe, be respectful, and be responsible.
BIST Procedures
- The teacher will model and reinforce the two BIST rules: 1) It is never okay to be disruptive. 2) It is never okay to be hurtful.
- The teacher will do individual/class triage when the students enter the classroom at the beginning of the day, during transitions, after specials, after lunch, after recess, or as needed.
- The “safe seat” is located on the south interior wall of each classroom.
- The materials for “safe seat” are located in “safe seat” desk.
- Students must sit quietly, focus on instruction, and complete their work while at the “safe seat.” If they cannot follow those directions, they will be removed to the Buddy Room.
- Mrs. Barth’s students go to Mrs. Showers and vice versa.
- When the Buddy Room teacher feels that the student is ready to return to their classroom and process, the student will go back to the “safe seat” in their own classroom.
- The classroom teacher will process with the student when time permits, and it is not disruptive to the other students.
- Students will be taught the "Clear the Room" procedure. Students will line up in front of the lockers by the art room and wait for their teacher.
- Students will sign in on the “safe seat” form and complete the Think Sheet, if needed.
- Teachers will look at "safe seat" and SWIS data monthly at team meetings to determine if a protective plan is needed.
- BIST procedures will be taught the first week of school and throughout the school year, as needed.
