Responsibility
In fifth grade at Riley, we use a unique way of combining multiple curriculum objectives and giving kids opportunities to practice the life skill of managing money.  Our goal is to expose students to the responsibility of earning a paycheck, managing money, and understanding the value of money.

At the beginning of the year each student has the opportunity to apply and interview for jobs within  the classroom.  Jobs range in responsibility and pay.  Students will be able to earn money in one of two ways: earning a pay check for the job they do and earning bonus money.  Each month they will be required to pay rent for their desk.  No job pays enough to cover rent each month, therefore the expectation has been set that they must earn bonus money in order to cover their rent.  The students will                         also be expected to pay for any fines they may occur.  Students will learn                             how to write a check, endorse a check, and keep a check register.

At the end of each quarter, all students with money in their bank account                     will be able to participate in an auction for numerous fun items if they so             choose to.  Past auction items have been lunch with the teacher, books,                                dictionaries, brain teasers, pens, pencils, and much more.
